EMERALD TRAIL CREW LEADER

Full-time, some weekends required

Reports to: COO

JOB SUMMARY

Be a part of caring for Jacksonville’s most exciting and significant new urban park, the Emerald Trail! The Emerald Trail Crew Leader is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of trail crew members and providing maintenance for the trail and other horticulture projects as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

● Leads Emerald Trail Stewards in daily operations to include maintenance, installations, and restorations. Ensures quality control of all trail maintenance activities.

● Ensures crew adherence to safety standards and procedures.

● Trains crew in green infrastructure best practices, tool use, equipment operation, and safety procedures.

● Oversee and participates in the following:

o Routine and seasonal maintenance for the Emerald Trail.

o Routine equipment and vehicle maintenance.

o Landscape installations and restorations for the Emerald Trail.

o Operates landscape maintenance tools such as rakes, shovels, saws, axes, trimmers, and pruners.

o Operates power equipment such as chainsaws, water pumps and blowers.

o Operates a utility trailer and work truck.

o Assists with pruning and removing trees.

o Make minor repairs on irrigation systems.

o Litter and debris removal.

● Assist volunteers on Emerald Trail workdays.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

● High School education required; two-year horticulture degree preferred

● 2+ years of landscaping/horticulture

● Supervisory experience required

● Valid Florida Driver’s License and good driving record required

● Professional landscape certifications a plus

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

● Knowledge of the tools and procedures used in the installation, maintenance and construction

of landscape projects. 

● Knowledge of landscaping and general horticultural practices and procedures.

● Knowledge of safety procedures and occupational hazards for landscaping activities.

● Skill in operating assigned vehicles and equipment.

● Ability to read, comprehend and apply rules and regulations, pesticide labels, work orders, plans and sketches.

● Ability to perform assigned tasks under adverse weather conditions.

● Ability to train, oversee, and review the work of others, counseling and recommending discipline when necessary.

● Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

● Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

● Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a computer for the purpose of completing timesheets, scanning documents, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

● Ability to work outside in the heat for extended periods of time.

● Ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel for long periods of time.

● Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

● Ability to carry 20 lb. backpack blower on back.

● Available to work a varied schedule (including Saturdays) in sometimes adverse weather conditions.
